The purpose of the knowledge topic is to give each of you a different "stake" and area of expertise in the issues being dealt with in the class. In order to prepare the assignment you should go to the library (physically or virtually) and explore materials that are available, which may have bearing on your topic. (If you can't find anything, or seem not to be able to find anything, please come and talk to me.) Using the materials that you have found, prepare a brief (two page, double-spaced) document that explores the topic and explains it in a way that might be informative and useful to your fellow classmates. In other words, how would your research help them understand the texts we're reading and prepare them to write a better paper!) Begin by introducing the topic, provide an overview of important information, and then discuss the significance of the topic as you see it. Provide at least two references that are not from encyclopedias. (Remember that encyclopedias are useful places to get references and information, although they are also sources that quickly become dated.) (Websites and Wikipedia are NOT admissible as sources.)
Your sources should adhere to a standard citation format such as the following:
Books:
Bryan G. Norton. Why Preserve Natural Variety? Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1987.
Articles:
J. H. Prescott. "Clever Hans: Training the trainers, or the potential for misinterpreting the results of dolphin research." Annals of the New York Academy of Science, Vol. 364 (1981):137-144.
The topics themselves are broad, but you can narrow them down to make them work more effectively. Don't hesitate to subdivide your topic by using headings to differentiate the each area of the topic under discussion.
